Material nobility

Dark oak, a concrete worktop and a peninsula that turns into the dining table

Project type
Kitchen design and 3D rendering
Location
Caracas, Venezuela

2022
Category
Kitchen

The kitchen opened onto a garden on two of its sides, so the first decision was not to block a single centimetre of window. All the storage was pushed onto the solid rear wall and the working area was resolved with a perpendicular peninsula, keeping the route outside clear.

The peninsula is the piece that organises everything: it holds the induction hob, screens the sink from view and extends into the dining table, so whoever is cooking and whoever is sitting down share the same piece of furniture. It saves floor area and avoids the feeling of a kitchen and a dining room simply stuck together.

The materials work by contrast: heavily grained oak in a dark tone for the fronts, polished concrete for the worktop and splashback, and grey microcement on the walls. To stop the timber from weighing the room down, the floor was kept in a large-format pale porcelain and the extractor was recessed into the ceiling, inside a coffer that also gathers the downlights.
