The family had been using the loft as a storeroom. They wanted it back, but could not decide what for: sometimes they talked about a cinema room, sometimes a study, sometimes a playroom. The answer was not to choose, and to organise it so that all three fit at once.
The roof itself sets the layout. The lower area, where an adult cannot stand comfortably, went to play: low house-shaped shelving, a small table and stools. The taller area, against the wallpapered wall, holds the sofa facing the television and a bespoke run of desk that uses the full depth of the wall.
The teal wallpapered wall acts as a common backdrop for all three functions and disguises the junction between the roof slopes, always the awkward point in a loft. Everything else was left white so as not to eat into the limited height, and the floor is a grey stone-effect porcelain: it survives play, chair castors and constant use.
