The bedroom came with two constraints that looked like problems at first: an exposed concrete slab the owners did not want to cover, and a run of glazing onto a terrace looking into the treetops. Both ended up being the project.
Against the hardness of the concrete, timber in quantity: a whole wall of vertical slats behind the headboard, a wide-plank floor and a bespoke unit running along the side wall with shelving and the television built in. The room is large, and that continuous cladding stops it from reading as empty.
The bed faces the window so the first thing you see on waking is the trees, and it was chosen with a woven frame in a dark tone: it is the only piece that talks to the grey of the ceiling. Lighting runs on a track of adjustable spots, surface-mounted because the concrete cannot take recessed fittings, and a woven fibre pendant supplies the warmth.
